Henri Julian Felix Rousseau was born on May 14th 1844 in Laval in the Loire Valley, Rousseau was the son of plumber and attended Laval High School, Rousseau was not a particularly accomplished student except in the Areas of art and music. Rousseau served in the French Army from 1863 to 1867. After his father passed away Rousseau moved to Paris to support his widowed mother in 1868 with a government job. In 1869 Rousseau entered into a relationship with Clemence Boitard, the daughter of a cabinet maker. The couple had 9 children, 7 of whom tragically perished due to tuberculosis. In 1871 a promotion to a tax collector in a toll collectors office. Rousseau to start painting recreation ally, as he entered his forties he started to devote more time and energy to his painting. At the age of 49 Rousseau retired and began to focus solely on his art. In 1888 Rousseau wife passed away and he later remarried. While Rousseau was largely self taught he did receive assistance from two established painters, Felix Auguste-Clement and Jean-Leon Gerome.
